Program Destination and Participants
This program is exclusively customized for Nepal for US high school band/symphony orchestra students, teachers and accompanying parents.
The primary goal of program is to promote music education and message of peace and unity through music. The program will also provide opportunity to US high school students/teachers to interact with students and music teachers from Nepal and introduce number of music instruments such as sitar, madal and tabla by one of the best in the world.
Nepal is known for their rich heritage with ancient temples reflecting the country’s great wealth of culture and tradition. Nepal is widely admired and known just known for its natural beauty and majestic mountains but multi-dimensional heritage encompasses the diversities of Nepal’s ethnic, tribal, and social groups, and it manifests in music and dance; art and craft; folklore and folktales; languages and literature; festivals and celebration. Its culture is mostly influenced by Indian, Mongolian and Tibetan culture. The region has unique blend of cultural diversity and nuances least understood in the rest of the world. There are different types of musical instruments that have evolved over the time and played in different occasions. Many folk/traditional musical instruments play important part in the diversity of South Asian musical heritage.
The program will provide participants to opportunity to practice and perform music along with high school students from Nepal. High School band/Symphony orchestra conductors will experience working with a few globally known artists in Nepal.
We are partnering this program with Nepal Tourism Board and a world known home grown musical group Sur Sudha (http://sursudha.com/). Sur Sudha have performed around the world Asia, Europe and Middle East, North America, and Australia. They have been invited to perform by US Embassy in Nepal, Prince Harry, and many other known music schools and academies. Local radio stations in Austin, Boulder and sometime in Boston play their music.
Sur Sudha will bring number of Nepali school students (musicians) and produce/practice music together with US High School group. Nepal does not have any organized band or orchestra program in schools and we expect US High School Music Ambassadors will generate interests among youth and make a lasting impact.
Additionally, participants will have opportunity visit touristic place outside Kathmandu. They will be taken to Pokhara and Chitwan where they will experience and learn about local culture and music. The participants will have opportunities to perform in three different events. In addition, they will visit local school and spend 8 hours of community/volunteer service in the community.
